Where earth, resin,
and light
collide

Hannah Friel Moen is a Scottsdale-based mixed media artist whose work lives at the intersection of the geological and the ethereal. Her signature process combines resin, encaustic wax, metallic pigments, and gold leaf to create richly textured paintings that evoke aerial landscapes, ancient rock formations, and the raw energy of the natural world.

What began as a passion for material experimentation has grown into a nationally recognized body of work — collected by interior designers, corporations, and private collectors across the country. Hannah's pieces are known for their extraordinary depth: each layer of resin sealing a moment in time, building a topography of color and light that shifts with every viewing angle.

Under the House of Moen name, Hannah offers original paintings, limited edition embellished prints, and fully custom commissions — bringing her unmistakable aesthetic to homes, hospitality spaces, and corporate environments that demand art with presence.

"I want people to feel like they're looking at something alive — like the earth itself is just beneath the surface, still moving."

— Hannah Friel Moen

Medium &
Method

Each piece is built through a labor-intensive layering process that can take weeks — sometimes months — to complete.

01

Resin & Encaustic

Hannah's foundation is hot wax encaustic — one of the world's oldest painting mediums — fused with contemporary resin. The result is a glossy, luminous surface with extraordinary depth that no print or photograph can fully capture.

02

Gold & Metal Leaf

Real gold, copper, and silver leaf are embedded directly into the resin layers, catching light and shifting throughout the day. The metallic inclusions give each piece an aliveness that changes with the viewer's position and the room's lighting.

03

Layered Pigment

Alcohol inks, acrylic, and specialty pigments are poured, tilted, and manipulated — then sealed under glass-clear resin. Each session adds dimensionality, building a piece that rewards extended looking with new discoveries.

On the work itself

My paintings begin with a question rather than a plan. I might start with a color relationship — the way burned amber sits against blue-green, or how gold leaf behaves differently in direct light versus shadow. From there, the work leads. I respond more than I direct.

The resin is both a material and a metaphor. It captures and preserves — a moment of pigment in motion, suspended forever. But it also adds weight and translucency, giving each layer something to sit beneath and something to be seen through. That depth is what I'm always chasing.

"I want collectors to discover something new in their piece every single day — a different color revealed by afternoon light, a detail that emerges in the evening."

On working with interior designers

Some of my favorite work has come through collaboration with designers who understand that art isn't decoration — it's the soul of a space. I work closely with designers from initial concept through installation, creating pieces sized and toned specifically for their project. Custom commissions are a significant part of my practice, and I take them seriously.

My 6×6" series was born from those conversations. Designers needed something flexible — a piece that could anchor a small wall, be grouped into a gallery installation, or serve as an entry-point for a new collector. The small format carries the same depth and process as my largest works.

On what makes House of Moen different

Beyond originals, I offer limited edition embellished prints — true 1-of-5 editions where each version is physically distinct. MAUI in a red frame with resin and hand-embellishment is a different object than MAUI in white. They share DNA but they're not the same piece. That model respects both accessibility and rarity.

I want people at every stage of collecting to find a way in — whether that's a 6×6" piece that starts a collection, a limited print that anchors a bedroom, or a 6-foot original commission that becomes the defining piece of a home.
